Editing, re writing, proofreading once, twice and again, are all part and parcel of the writing craft. Spell check utilities often fail us, because they are not programmed for context, so will not catch such mistakes. If you type “there” when you should have used “their,” the utility will not point out the error.
His breakthrough work was a play called Tamara, an experimental theatre piece launched in Toronto in 1981. Critics describe it as 10 plays in one that happen in separate rooms all at once with the audience wandering through, catching snippets of what’s happening, with no viewing quite the same as the one before. He knew that only an outcast like himself could properly handle the job and be deserving of such an honor.
He is survived by his wife, Carla Lejade, of Malibu, California and two daughters, Anna Ford Henderson, Boston, Mass., and Emily Sterret of Richmond, VA whom he cherished above all else. The family asked that donations be made in memory of Bruce to the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina; or The Simonton Cancer Center, care of Carl Simonton.
